Below are a few tips for making sure you (and your child) get the best out of their first pedal bike. Of course we’re here to help, and you can always call us for advice.
1. Is your child pedalling?
If your child is not yet pedalling, go for a balance bike, or tuition to quickly get them happily pedalling. Once they’re pedalling, it’s time to reward their achievement with a pedal bike! Stablisers don’t work (find out why here).
Consider the type of bike you’re going for
Bikes at the lower end of the market tend to be heavy (half the weight of the child, making it very difficult for youngsters to pedal – a lot like an adult trying to pedal a 30kg bike!) but also toy bikes have poor quality components that don’t last. What’s more – there tends to be no actual saving with a cheap toy bike, as if you invest a little more, you’ll get a great resale value on the bike and the bike is easier and more fun to ride. You don’t lose money – the value only decreases by about the same as a cheap bike would cost – and of course, with a better bike, the child gets a better experience, and you get peace of mind with a warranty, and when the time comes you can pass it on to the next child or sell it.
3. buy the right size!
A good bike shop will always make sure you leave with the right size bike. Online charts and algorithms don’t work for every child as small changes in proportions can mean a different bike is required to that suggested on the chart.
4. Get a proper bike setup
Even when the bike is the right size for the child, there are more adjustments to be made. It is unlikely that a bike straight out of the box is going to be set up correctly for your child. This will improve the cycling experience for your child, he or she will be able to pedal more efficiently, and won’t get aches, strains or pins and needles associated with a bad setup.
Receiving a first bike is a magical time. Take the time to enjoy the experience, have fun discussing colour choices with your child – and get that first bike ride in the diary! Enjoy!
Don’t forget, we’re always here to help. Our customers get a free cycle helmet safety and suitability check, free bike setup, and also a free first service too.
